Description
Charlotte was commissioned to produce the 12th new design for the William Hill St. Leger Stakes Winners’ Trophy by Sheffield Hallam University and Doncaster Racecourse. She took her inspiration from Doncaster’s historic links to the aeronautical industry, in particular, the race course’s history of hosting one of the largest air shows in the country; including the first ever air show to take place in Britain in 1909. With 2018 also marking the 100th anniversary of the RAF, and all the celebrations that inspired, it seemed a fitting theme.
‘It occurred to me that there are many comparisons between a racing horse and an aeroplane in flight; the consideration of aerodynamics, the apparent fluidity of movement and the thrill of speed, all combined to give each an alluring grace and elegance. This is what I have tried to capture in my design.’
